The Return of the Enforcer: Tommy Hemmer Comes Home to the ECMO Eagles
Written by Coach C - SemiPro GameDay
In football, there are players who simply show up to play… and then there are players who change the temperature of an entire defense the moment they step onto the field.
For the ECMO Eagles, the return of All-CMFL Safety Tommy Hemmer is exactly that kind of moment.
After spending the 2025 season with the St. Louis Falcons, Hemmer is back where his journey in the CMFL truly began and according to him, this return is far more than just another stop in his football career.
It’s unfinished business.
And if his words are any indication, the Eagles defense is about to get a whole lot louder, tougher, and meaner in 2026.
A Journey That Came Full Circle
Hemmer speaks about his time with the Falcons with deep respect and gratitude. The experience shaped him and helped sharpen the player he has become today.
But the Eagles? That’s where the story started.
“The Falcons were very, very special and I believe God put them in my life for a reason. Much love,” Hemmer said. “But I started in 24 with the ECMO Eagles. They found me when I thought I hung it up for good.”
When Hemmer first arrived in Hermann, it was during the early stages of the Eagles’ rebuild. Players like Justus Pedrero helped bring him into the fold, and from there a brotherhood began to form.
“I made chemistry with a lot of guys over here,” Hemmer admitted. “I bailed on them for myself. This return means everything to me..... gaining their respect and trust back and helping finish what was started.”
Now back in the Eagles facility and fully locked in, Hemmer believes the time away only sharpened his edge.
“The dust is completely knocked off and two years back in the facility I’m ready to show out in orange and black for my guys.”
The Honey Badger Mentality
If you ask Hemmer to describe his style of play, the answer comes quickly and it’s not subtle.
“I describe my style of play as mentally tougher than the next guy with an IQ that helps see the play before it happens,” he said.
The comparison that follows will sound familiar to football fans.
“I was called the Honey Badger in school. I liked to base my style off of him. I love to hit and I love to let you know about it.”
That mentality.... physical, fearless, and vocal is exactly what the Eagles defense expects him to bring.
A Leader in the Secondary
Hemmer isn’t just returning as a playmaker.
He’s returning as a leader.
For a defense that already features aggressive players like Cody Willis, Aaron Hudson, Cody Crump, and EJ McPike, Hemmer believes the key will be channeling that energy into a unified force.
“I bring leadership and knowledge to the defense,” he said. “Bringing the chemistry back and making 10 others angry and flying around to the ball. Bringing excitement and contact.”
Leadership, however, isn’t something he overthinks.
“I don’t handle it,” Hemmer explained. “I just play ball and try to give my guys momentum so we are firing on all cylinders. If you truly care about what you’re doing, the effort for leadership and playmaking comes naturally.”
The Standard Has Been Raised
Hemmer also made it clear that the Eagles are building something serious behind the scenes.
Since the end of the 2025 season, the team has been grinding — working, rebuilding, and tightening their chemistry.
But that growth comes with expectations.
“Pushing harder for greatness,” Hemmer said. “Finding the guys that want to put the extra effort in so we can grow on every level.”
And if you’re not built for that grind?
“I’m not gonna build chemistry with the guy who wants it less than me. We’re not on the same page. Give me the guys who want the same results and put in the time. We’re getting that here.”
The Quarterback of the Defense
While the defensive coordinator calls the plays, Hemmer’s role on the field is far from passive.
In many ways, he serves as the final chess piece in the secondary..... the player who reads the offense and adjusts accordingly.
“My role is very important,” Hemmer explained. “Our DC calls the plays in, and I audible if I see fit.”
With a deep understanding of his teammates’ strengths, Hemmer uses his football IQ to adjust coverage and position players where they can succeed.
“I know I got playmakers around me. I know their strengths and weaknesses against different formations. Expect me to lose my voice every game!”
A Defense That Brings the Grit
Hemmer believes the Eagles are close to unlocking something special defensively.
But the key is simple: everyone has to buy in.
“Everybody has to buy in. Not me, me, me guys,” he said. “Once you buy into the system and trust what’s going on, all there is is room for improvement.”
And according to Hemmer, that defensive identity may be the missing ingredient.
“I believe giving the Eagles a defense will give us the grit we’re missing.”
Making Quarterbacks Uncomfortable
If opposing quarterbacks are hoping for easy reads against the Eagles this year, Hemmer has a message for them.
“I want them not knowing what coverage I’m in,” he said. “I want them to feel uncomfortable and scared to throw it under pressure.”
“I want them thinking, this ain’t happening through the air.”
Hemmer has always been a disciplined safety — a player focused on preventing big plays rather than chasing flashy stats.
But that might change a little in 2026.
“I don’t take many chances,” he said. “At the end of the day, as long as the ball isn’t moving downfield and receivers aren’t catching the ball, I feel my job is done.”
But this year, he plans to expand his game.
“I’ve got a lot to prove. Expect me to make the jump and take the chances this year to boost our momentum.”
And the reason he can play a little more aggressively?
“I can take chances this year with the guys who are behind me.....mistakes can happen.”
Hemmer saved his most passionate message for the Eagles faithful and for the rest of the CMFL.
The team has been working.
And they believe something powerful is forming in Hermann.
“We’ve been going every week since the 25 season ended,” Hemmer said. “We’ve regrouped and started coming together. From the backups to the starters, this is an aggressive team on both sides of the ball.”
The defense is loaded with angry playmakers.
The offense is just as physical, led by QB Toni Pisoni and RB Justus Pedrero.
“There’s been a lot of weapons recruited,” Hemmer revealed. “And they don’t get hype yet until it’s earned.”
But one promise he is willing to make?
“I promise to Eagles fans that this one will be a treat, and be prepared for these newcomers to make an immediate impact.”
Then he finished with the rally cry Eagles fans know well.
One thing is certain heading into the 2026 CMFL season:
The ECMO Eagles defense just got its enforcer back.
And if Tommy Hemmer has anything to say about it, quarterbacks around the league are about to learn very quickly that throwing the football against the Eagles might be a very bad idea.
